RIP Dr. Lonnie Smith - Thank You For The Music

Dr. Lonnie Smith has died

Cheating with academic degrees is a bane in politics, but a blessing in pop.
Dr. Beat, Professor Longhair and others have no academic degree, they use their stage names to ensure that the listeners will remember them. This is also the case with the organ virtuoso Dr. Lonnie Smith, who gained his first experience as a trumpeter and singer in the 1960s. Soon he switched to the Hammond organ and created the typical sound for it. He established his reputation as a sideman playing with guitarist George Benson and the saxophonist Lou Donaldson. The instrumentals, which lie somewhere between jazz, soul and funk, were called soul jazz, and Smith's debut "Finger Lickin 'Good Soul Organ" in 1967 was predestined for this designation. On Wednesday, Dr. Lonnie Smith died of pulmonary fibrosis at the age of 79. #drlonniesmith #hammond #organ #souljazz #thankyouforthemusic
