Matana Roberts: Coin Coin Chapter Four: "Memphis"

Political messages are usually transported across the text in the music business. Chicago based saxophonist Matana Roberts wants more. With her project "Coin Coin" she tells the story of her family since the 18th century, when her ancestors came to North America as slaves. Roberts began searching for clues in 2011. She plans twelve musical chapters, "Memphis" is the fourth album in the series. Roberts transforms the complexity of the huge project with a diverse musical approach: Gospel choirs, songs of the workers, spoken word, blues and free jazz are blended with elements of avant-garde and new music.
